We had the best time shooting A & T's wedding at The Old Mill in Napier, so we wanted to give it a proper write-up! This is our honest photographer's-eye review, what the venue's actually like, who it suits, & a whole bunch of real photos from the day :)

Short version: it's a hidden little gem. If you want somewhere intimate, green & full of character (& incredibly photogenic!), keep reading.

The Old Mill

Tucked into the historic 1923 Napier mill buildings.

The Old Mill is hidden away in the old brick buildings of the Napier Woollen Company's mill, up in the hills on Hospital Hill, & honestly most people have no idea it's there! Behind the 1923 façade is a delightful courtyard garden full of flowers, fountains & big gum trees.

It's an intimate venue (up to 90 guests) set up for private functions, so the whole place feels like it's yours for the day. Caterers can use the kitchen, or you can bring your own. A special, characterful spot for a smaller Hawke's Bay wedding.

The setting

Fountains, greenery & wine barrels everywhere.

This is what makes The Old Mill so special to shoot, the courtyard is packed with lush greenery, little fountains, climbing ivy & wine barrels, so there's a gorgeous backdrop in basically every direction.

It's leafy & cool even on a warm Hawke's Bay day, & the historic brick & timber give everything so much texture & warmth.

The day

Relaxed, intimate & easy.

Because everything's in one tucked-away spot, the day just flowed, ceremony, drinks & reception all in & around the courtyard, with guests spilling between the garden & the buildings.

That intimacy is the whole appeal. Everyone's together, it's relaxed, & no one's rushing between locations.

A & T

Portraits in the green.

For couple photos you barely have to leave the courtyard, that wall of ivy, the timber & the garden corners do so much of the work.

We grabbed a few quiet minutes with A & T through the day & the light in here is lovely & soft. Genuinely one of the easier venues we've shot for beautiful portraits without going anywhere.

The little touches

Cake on a barrel, family & the details.

Little moments like cutting the cake on a wine barrel, the kids running around the fountains, family photos against the greenery, this is the stuff that makes a smaller wedding feel so personal.

The Old Mill just lends itself to it. It's homely & warm, not big & formal, & that really comes through in the photos.
