The spots we actually take couples to around the Manawatū, with a note on the light, the drive & who each one suits, from a local wedding photographer.

8 spots Palmerston North & Manawatū Updated July 2026

Okay so once you've sorted your venue, the next question we get is always the same, where do we actually go for photos?! And honestly the Manawatū is such an underrated spot for it. In one afternoon you can go from riverside gardens to rolling golden hills to a wild west-coast beach, all within about half an hour of town :)

This is the list we'd give any couple getting married around here. We've put a real note on each one, the kind of light it gives you, roughly how far it is from town, & who it suits, so you can build a little photo plan that actually flows on the day.

One honest heads up: the photos through this guide are our real Manawatū weddings, they're here to show the feel & the light the region gives you, not to say every shot was taken at that exact spot. Your photographer will always tailor the spots to your day, your dress & the weather!

Victoria Esplanade & the Manawatū River

Gardens, roses & native bush, five minutes from the middle of town.

The Esplanade is the easy one, it's a big riverside park right in Palmerston North with rose gardens, a conservatory, mature trees & native bush, all free & open to the public. If your ceremony or reception is in town & you don't want a long drive, this is honestly the most convenient photo spot there is.

It's green & leafy most of the year, & the light through the trees late in the afternoon is so pretty. Great for couples who want gardens & a relaxed stroll without going anywhere :)

Te Āpiti & the Manawatū Gorge

Ridgelines, wind turbines & big valley views out toward Woodville.

If you want drama, head out to Te Āpiti between Ashhurst & Woodville. The wind-farm ridgelines & the gorge give you these huge sweeping views you just don't get in town, & the turbines up on the range make for a really striking, modern backdrop.

It's about twenty minutes out & it can get breezy up there (it's a wind farm for a reason!), so it suits couples who don't mind a bit of movement in the hair & dress, honestly that windswept look is gorgeous on camera :)

  • Ridgeline & valley views
  • Can be windy (in a good way!)
  • Epic at golden hour

Ashhurst Domain & the Pohangina Valley

Riverside oaks & quiet rural back-country, north-east of town.

Ashhurst Domain sits right by the river with big old oaks & open lawns, & just past it the Pohangina Valley opens up into some of the prettiest quiet rural country in the region. It's got that soft, leafy, tucked-away feel.

This one's lovely for couples who want a natural, unfussy backdrop that isn't a manicured garden, more of a real countryside feel, with the river & the trees doing the work. About fifteen minutes out :)

Foxton Beach & Himatangi Beach

Wild west-coast sand & huge skies for a sunset finish.

For that big open beach look, the west coast is only about half an hour from town. Foxton & Himatangi are proper wild Tasman beaches, black sand, driftwood, massive skies, & because they face west you get the sun setting right out over the water.

If you can sneak away for even fifteen minutes near sunset, a beach like this is unreal, so much space & that golden-into-pink light. Just wear something you don't mind getting a bit sandy!

  • ~30–40 min from Palmerston North
  • West-facing for sunsets
  • Big open skies & driftwood
  • Wear beach-friendly shoes

Massey University grounds & Wharerata

Mature trees & heritage buildings, ten minutes from the CBD.

The Massey campus has some of the loveliest mature trees & heritage architecture in the city, & the old Wharerata homestead (built in 1901) sits right in the middle of it with its gardens & veranda. It's a classic, slightly grand backdrop without a big drive.

Really nice for couples who want that established, elegant garden-&-heritage look close to town. If you're getting ready or having your reception at Wharerata, you barely have to move for photos :)

  • Mature trees & heritage buildings
  • 1901 Wharerata homestead

Turitea & the Tararua foothills

Tree-lined country roads & rolling farmland at golden hour.

Just south-east of town the land starts to roll up toward the Tararua Range, & the back roads out through Turitea are lined with trees & open farmland. It's our go-to for that warm, golden, end-of-day country look.

There's no single 'spot' here, it's more that the whole area glows in the last hour of light. Perfect for a quiet drive-out with just the two of you while your guests are settling into the reception :)

Cross Hills Gardens, Kimbolton

Renowned rhododendron & woodland gardens, up Feilding way.

Cross Hills near Kimbolton is one of the best-known gardens in the country for rhododendrons & woodland planting, & in spring it goes absolutely wild with colour. It's about forty minutes north, so it's more of a destination, but if you love gardens it's so worth it.

Best suited to spring weddings when everything's in bloom, & to couples who genuinely love a lush, layered garden setting. Do check their open dates & any wedding arrangements ahead of time :)

Don't sleep on the middle of town! Te Marae o Hine / The Square, the old heritage buildings around it & a few good laneways give you a completely different, more urban & architectural feel, all within walking distance if your venue's central.

This one's great for couples who want a bit of city character mixed in, or who just want to keep everything close & easy. A nice contrast shot to balance out all the greenery :)

Common questions

How much time should we set aside for wedding photos?

For couple photos on their own, most couples are comfortable with somewhere around 30 to 45 minutes, ideally near golden hour (the hour before sunset) when the light's at its best. If you want to visit more than one spot or you're driving out of town, give yourself a bit more. We'll always build a realistic timeline with you so it never feels rushed :)

When is the best light for wedding photos in the Manawatū?

Golden hour, the hour or so before sunset, is the dreamiest, soft, warm & flattering. A slightly overcast day is actually lovely too, it gives even, gentle light with no harsh shadows. Harsh midday sun is the trickiest, so if your ceremony's at noon we'll plan the couple photos for later in the day.

Do you need a permit for wedding photos at these spots?

For a quick couple shoot with just the two of you, most public parks & beaches are fine, but some council reserves & gardens do ask you to book or get permission for a wedding party, especially if you want exclusive use. Always check with the specific place (or your venue) ahead of time, & we're happy to help you sort it.

What if it rains on the day?

Honestly, some of the most beautiful, moody photos happen in the rain! We always have a wet-weather plan, clear umbrellas, covered spots & indoor options, so you never have to stress about the forecast. The Manawatū weather does what it wants, so we just roll with it :)
